Leave The Junk In The Trunk!

We all carry junk. Whether it’s the person that just cut you off on the way to a meeting or you just had a fight with your partner, leave your junk in the trunk!

What Do You Mean By Junk?

When I talk about junk, I’m referring to all that negative stuff that gathers throughout our day.

  • junkYour partner is mad at you because you didn’t put out the garbage
  • Your teenager is mad at you because you said no!
  • You’re mad at your business partners because you don’t like the direction they want to go.
  • You were just pulled over speeding on the way to your meeting.

In the grand scheme of things, how much of this really matters? I don’t see how much of the above is really life threatening or changing. I have to say, for the most part, it’s just junk. Junk happens.

Junk Collection

Some of us seem to go out looking for junk to collect. Others seem to attract it. Either way, most of us have certain amounts of junk in our lives. Whatever you do, don’t look in my garage! The biggest challenge is deciding what junk to keep and where to put it.

Imagine one of those days when you are late leaving for an important meeting. You are presenting to your team who looks to you to set the example. Half way out the door, you spill coffee on your white shirt. Now you have lost 10 minutes changing. The time pressure causes you to put a little pressure on the gas pedal and the cop behind you doesn’t think it’s a good idea. There goes another 20 minutes and likely more than a few dollars. Now you’re mad!

Junk In The Trunk

car trunkRemember, the most important element in leadership is duplication. Whatever you do, there is a good chance they will copy. It’s quite OK to get mad, even healthy. The trick is to learn how to put it away when it’s in the way.

Imagine you have decided to clean out the car because you are taking prospects or clients to your meeting. Inevitably, we find a lot of junk we didn’t even realize was in there. All of a sudden you realize you only have a few minutes before you have to leave. You have a bag full of junk but you don’t have time to sort it out for recycle, resell or reuse. What to do? Put your junk in the trunk. Deal with it after the meeting is over and there is no one around to see you dealing with your junk.

The Direction of Junk

Never dump your junk downward. Just as you shouldn’t expect your kids to clean up your mess, you shouldn’t expect the people you are training to deal with your junk.

For example, my wife and I work as a team. There are times when we agree to clean up after each other in order to achieve a combined goal. Unless the kids have been working directly with me and contributed to the mess, I don’t ask them to clean it up. That just creates resentment and then perpetuates the problem for generations to come. On the other hand, it’s quite OK for my kids to come to me for help when they just feel overwhelmed and can’t figure something out.

It’s the same in business, MLM or otherwise. We are directors in our business. If I need to dump on someone, it’s executive director or higher. It’s their responsibility to help me work through things when I feel overwhelmed and yes, sometimes it may be personal. I will do the same for the people who look up to me for leadership.

A true leader knows when it’s time to leave the junk in the trunk!

Make it a great day,

Barry

Sales Isn’t For Everyone But Is It For You?

We often hear people with MLM opportunities say “anyone can do sales”. Bull roar! Sales isn’t for everyone but is it for you?

What is “Sales”?

Believe it or not, those MLM folks are partly right about sales. We all sell every day.

  • Wife convinces husband to watch a favourite show.
  • Child convinces a parent to change a rule.
  • Mechanic convinces you the car needs an oil change.
  • The clerk at McDonald’s asks “do you want fries with that”.

In every instance, someone is selling an idea, process, product or service to someone else.

image of woman pulling manSales is the act of convincing someone to change their mind about something with the hope that they will see things your way. The popular phrase in sales is “stop selling and help them buy”. No matter how you cut it, it’s still sales. You helped move someone from one position to another and if you did it well, they think it’s their idea!

The question really becomes do you WANT to do sales? In each of the examples in the list above, someone had a strong desire to convince someone they had the best idea and their prospect NEEDED to follow their lead.

What are you passionate about? Do you have a strong enough belief to risk being told no? If the answer is no, the response is NEXT! Find what you are passionate about and do that.

Is Sales Ability Natural or Can You Learn?

Listen without judging. When you meet a “natural” sales person, the reality is that they learned from someone somewhere. Have you ever met that person who could sell anything to anyone? Take a look at their family and I will bet you someone close to them shows many of the same traits. This could digress into a discussion of nature versus nurture but I believe we grow up mimicking what we see.

Now, if you didn’t grow up in an environment where “selling comes natural”, it just means you may have to make a decision to grow and change. There are a few ways to do this.

Why Multi-Level Marketing?

Taking a program at university can cost thousands of dollars and years of your life.

Insurance and investment companies are great for training but again, there is a commitment of time and cost. In my case, my monthly cost was over $700/month on average. I left that business.

Opening your own business? The sky is the limit! If you bought a franchise it could be hundreds of thousands. You would have to sell a lot of coffee to pay that off!

By far, the most economical way to get sales training and probably better than you could get at any university, is to find a reputable Multi-level Marketing Opportunity.

photo agreeingMy wife’s business is a great opportunity for personal growth. I watched a person one time who, when they started, was afraid of their own shadow. After a few months, they were presenting to the group of people who had been meeting every Friday to work on business planning together. Another that I really believe in is connected to this blog. And the training is free whether you join the business or not! Click here to check out coaching from Joel Therien.

The reality is you can learn sales if you want to. Start with Why!

Selling is one of the most lucrative careers for good reason. It’s not easy at first and takes time to learn. There are those who make sales, whether in a bricks and mortar business or MLM, look easy. I compare them to famous musicians. Most put in a lot of time and effort to become good at what they do.

Do you have what it takes? Do you want it bad enough to do the work?

Sales isn’t for everyone but is it for you?

Make it a great day!

P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for learning opportunities. I’m thankful for the MLM industry. I’m thankful you took the time to read this far! What are you thankful for today?

Can’t or Won’t? Which is it really?

How often does somebody tell you that something can’t be done only to find out that the impossible was quite possible? There are very few things that can’t be done. In most cases, it’s just difficult and requires creative thinking and some extra effort.

We can’t…

Someone asked me about creating a survey that is not as drab and as boring as is most common. They wanted to create something more engaging. There were a few concerns. Attractive design, security and standards.

Where would the servers be? This is because of privacy issues and international law with regard to access. Stakeholders might have a concern because they  or their families may be at risk if someone were able to identify them. As North Americans we often take our life and liberty for granted.

Man giving thumbs down.We were told we can’t do what we want to do. There is a guideline on what sites should look like and it must be AODA compliant. My opinion is that what this really means is that it’s not as simple as hoped and could take some time and effort.

I suggested doing the engagement piece through a landing page which would provide some flexibility in presentation and make it more inviting to complete the survey. By doing this, the survey itself becomes quick and simple.

Everyone we asked was so focused on current policy and guidelines they don’t see the opportunity in front of them to actually make changes to facilitate true collaboration and communication. They are so focused on telling that they aren’t listening.

Or, we won’t…

Won’t do something is what most identify as can’t. For example, your family tells you there is no way to be successful in network or online marketing. In other words, you can’t be successful. You accept what they tell you and don’t make any changes in how you think or what you do. In the end you prove them right. You can’t because you won’t.

This is like the age old question about the chicken and the egg. Which came first? In the case of can’t or won’t, if you won’t then you can’t. If you will, you can!

Will You or Won’t You?

Whether you will or won’t change attitudes and behaviors determines whether you can or can’t achieve something new. The question is who will make the decision?

3D-Women-Question-02An open mind is like a parachute, if it’s closed, it won’t work. Just because someone won’t open their mind to opportunity and possibility doesn’t mean you have to crash with them. Don’t be like lemmings and follow the leader off the cliff.

Be the leader. Look and think for yourself,  release the self imposed constraints and watch how different the outcome can be!

Make it a great day,

Barry

P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for open minds. I’m thankful for opportunities to effect change. I’m thankful for the power of the Internet. What are you thankful for today?

Stop Worshiping MLM Leaders

We need to stop worshiping MLM leaders so that they can be more effective. Have you ever been a leader and felt some days like you just wish you could hide because of the pressure that the expectations of others creates for you? We are designed to worship but not to be worshiped.

Carey Nieuwhof from Connexus Church does a great job of drawing on references from the bible and making connections to every day people. You and me. You really need to watch Week 4 of that series on being overwhelmed.

What do I mean “worshipping MLM leaders”?

man-flyingI have been to many events where they have invited people from within the industry and put them at the front of the room to perform. Master of Ceremonies (MC) will introduce the speaker with such deference that you might think it was God Himself coming onto the stage.

Imagine the pressure that puts on leadership! Everyone has expectations of perfection. Over time, you often see these people become very narcissistic and lose track of their own identity. Eventually, people start to lose respect for them. If the leader is lucky enough, he or she will realize what is happening and return to their roots. I believe that is why many of them become more spiritual as they regain their identities.

Respect, not worship.

We instinctively look to worship. The MC is only reacting to that natural instinct and because he or she has great faith in the business and speaker, they use language that reflects their commitment to their cause. The challenge is to ensure that it doesn’t become devotional and lead to worshiping people, money or possessions. Don’t get me wrong, realistic goals are great and relative to where you are at any given time. Worship is destructive to the idol and to you in the end.

3D-Women-Shake-Hand-01By all means, respect the person and their achievements. Learn from them and thank them for sharing their knowledge. Keep in mind they are human just like you and me. Maybe offer the take them to dinner to thank them for their time but don’t worship them. It’s a long fall off a pedestal. Do you want to be part of the problem that leads to their fall from grace?

Love and appreciate them and that will leave them free to do the same for themselves and others without being destroyed.

Whether you are spiritual or not, I highly recommend watching the complete series of “Overwhelmed“. There is so much insight that applies to business and life in general.

Make it a great day,

Barry

Business Building: Three will make you free, six will make you rich!

Business building can seem daunting some days but the answer is actually simple. Finding three leaders will free you, six will make you rich.

Business Building

Whether you are building a sales organization in the insurance industry or in a direct selling or MLM, the concept is much the same. You need to decide whether you will focus on just selling product or, do you find like minded people to work with you to find customers for your product or service? Don’t get me wrong, no business will survive without a solid product or service that meets the needs of enough people to be profitable. In the end, you need sellers in your organization as well.

Some are sales superstars and just enjoy being on the go all the time. Many are more excited by the hunt than the sale itself. Others are more like coaches and enjoy helping others achieve success.

While you are selling, look for the coaches and bring them into your business. Choose carefully.

Three Will Make You Free

This applies to those who prefer to build a sales team. Find three people who can do what you do and then teach them to duplicate what you have done.

It’s all about distribution. Think about the retail market. Where is the real money? Yes, the manufacturer or service provider makes a good profit but it’s the middle man or distributor that has the leverage to make the most.

Six Will Make You Rich

Man with profit bar chartMake a little off the efforts of many. This is how most chain stores make their money. They have multiple distribution centres that all contribute a little bit adding up to big dollars. Imagine if Walmart or Loblaw only had one store. You need to be like the large chain stores and have more distribution points. Leverage the efforts of others.

Three distribution points (people) will free you from a job, six will make you rich.

Coaching pays better than just selling because it leaves you more time for yourself.

What will you chose?

Make it a great day!

Barry

P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for great coaches. I’m thankful for great products and services. I’m thankful for like minded people.
