Over 50 and Looking For Something. But What?

Are you over 50 and looking for something but really don’t know what?

Over 50

Peanut Butter & Jelly SandwichMany of us go through life believing we are “on track”. On track for what? All of a sudden we reach 50 and the kids are gone. For many of us, our parents are gone and others are feeling like PB & J. Squished between the demands of our children and our parents if they are still with us.

We reach that time in our lives when the kids are grown enough that they don’t need us the same way any more. For some, our parents have become the needy “kids” in our lives and create demands on our time. Regardless, we “The Sandwich Generation” find ourselves redefining who we are and where we are headed. Somehow I’ll bet that most of us aren’t where we thought we would be at this point in our lives.

  • Pensions may not afford us the financial resources to have true financial freedom to travel at will.
  • The kids’ students loans are crushing them and we aren’t able to help.
  • Our parents need our help physically and in some cases, financially.

Most of us are in various stages at this point in our lives. So much for that dream of independence and being white haired jet setters we had when we were young adults!  Some are lucky enough to have great pensions, the mortgage is paid and parents are the jet setters we want to be. Others have remortgaged their homes, maybe more than once, to help with the kids’ educations, weddings or first home purchases. Still others are working more than one job just to keep roof over their heads.

What are you looking for?

  • A new life partner?
  • New friends with shared interests?
  • Extra income to meet current financial obligations?
  • Building a retirement income?
  • All of the above?

A New Life Partner

love-1643452_640First, let me say, I can’t really offer experienced advice in this area. I am lucky enough to have been married now for over 28 years to a wonderful woman and don’t foresee ever being in this position. All I can say is that if I were looking for a new life partner, I would first need to identify what my passions are and then put myself in situations where I meet others with like interests. The fact that they are out there would in and of itself mean we have commonality.

New friends with shared interests

CoachesI don’t know about you but when I was younger, my parents used to tell me that friends will come and go throughout my life. They were right. When my kids were younger, three out of four were involved in competitive soccer. I ended up managing a rep team, coaching indoor house league teams and generally facilitating their sports activities. As a result of the time required, we made our friends there.

Now, all of our kids are grown and doing very different things. As much as I miss those friends, we no longer have the same commonalities. We still talk once in a while but life has moved on. We now find ourselves looking to meet new people at a similar point in their lives to spend time with.

Extra income to meet current financial obligations

When I started my first full time job, I thought I would be retiring at 65 with a full pension and never expected to do anything different. Surprise! That company laid me off during the 80’s when they were trying to survive. I went to work for a competitor who ended up buying them out. By the mid 90’s, it happened again. I was “downsized”.

Two careers later, disaster struck our family and my business ended drying up. I went back to my roots to at least put some bread on the table. I was surrounded by other men in very similar circumstances, working as much as three part time jobs trying to make one income. I was lucky enough to find a job with a pension but it will be much smaller than originally expected and I will need to find another source to supplement my retirement income.

Building a retirement income

CompensationThere are definitely other options. You just need to open your mind to possibilities.

First thing to decide is if you will retire or re-engage. Some will have to take yet another job in retirement in order to survive and/or have anything for extras like vacation and travel. Whatever happened to that just being an expected outcome of years of working? Others will start a business of some kind.

I would suggest that you keep your mind open to different options. The author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Robert Kyosaki advocates that you consider MLM as a way to get seed money for other investments. From there you may decide to open a bricks and mortar operation, invest in stocks or just enjoy the residual income from that business.

All of the above

What if someone is in a situation where it’s all of the above?

Don’t let that scare you. Believe it or not, I have met people in one of our businesses where they were exactly that and they have found a partner, earned a living and built an ongoing and residual income that will not only look after them but will actually let them leave a legacy.

Whatever your situation, I advise working on yourself first. A saying I heard that resonates for me is “become the person you want to attract”. Read good books, watch good videos and put yourself around good people. Did you know that if you read 10-15 pages of a book every day that you would complete at least 10 books a year? Don’t let the job of becoming your best you be intimidating and don’t let the crabs hold you back. Start reading!

Best of luck on this journey we call life and if you think I could help, reach out!

Make it a great day,

Barry

P.S What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for open minds, great books and great mentors. What are you thankful for today?

Sales Isn’t For Everyone But Is It For You?

We often hear people with MLM opportunities say “anyone can do sales”. Bull roar! Sales isn’t for everyone but is it for you?

What is “Sales”?

Believe it or not, those MLM folks are partly right about sales. We all sell every day.

  • Wife convinces husband to watch a favourite show.
  • Child convinces a parent to change a rule.
  • Mechanic convinces you the car needs an oil change.
  • The clerk at McDonald’s asks “do you want fries with that”.

In every instance, someone is selling an idea, process, product or service to someone else.

image of woman pulling manSales is the act of convincing someone to change their mind about something with the hope that they will see things your way. The popular phrase in sales is “stop selling and help them buy”. No matter how you cut it, it’s still sales. You helped move someone from one position to another and if you did it well, they think it’s their idea!

The question really becomes do you WANT to do sales? In each of the examples in the list above, someone had a strong desire to convince someone they had the best idea and their prospect NEEDED to follow their lead.

What are you passionate about? Do you have a strong enough belief to risk being told no? If the answer is no, the response is NEXT! Find what you are passionate about and do that.

Is Sales Ability Natural or Can You Learn?

Listen without judging. When you meet a “natural” sales person, the reality is that they learned from someone somewhere. Have you ever met that person who could sell anything to anyone? Take a look at their family and I will bet you someone close to them shows many of the same traits. This could digress into a discussion of nature versus nurture but I believe we grow up mimicking what we see.

Now, if you didn’t grow up in an environment where “selling comes natural”, it just means you may have to make a decision to grow and change. There are a few ways to do this.

Why Multi-Level Marketing?

Taking a program at university can cost thousands of dollars and years of your life.

Insurance and investment companies are great for training but again, there is a commitment of time and cost. In my case, my monthly cost was over $700/month on average. I left that business.

Opening your own business? The sky is the limit! If you bought a franchise it could be hundreds of thousands. You would have to sell a lot of coffee to pay that off!

By far, the most economical way to get sales training and probably better than you could get at any university, is to find a reputable Multi-level Marketing Opportunity.

photo agreeingMy wife’s business is a great opportunity for personal growth. I watched a person one time who, when they started, was afraid of their own shadow. After a few months, they were presenting to the group of people who had been meeting every Friday to work on business planning together. Another that I really believe in is connected to this blog. And the training is free whether you join the business or not! Click here to check out coaching from Joel Therien.

The reality is you can learn sales if you want to. Start with Why!

Selling is one of the most lucrative careers for good reason. It’s not easy at first and takes time to learn. There are those who make sales, whether in a bricks and mortar business or MLM, look easy. I compare them to famous musicians. Most put in a lot of time and effort to become good at what they do.

Do you have what it takes? Do you want it bad enough to do the work?

Sales isn’t for everyone but is it for you?

Make it a great day!

Barry

P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for learning opportunities. I’m thankful for the MLM industry. I’m thankful you took the time to read this far! What are you thankful for today?

Pyramid or Business Opportunity? That Sounds Like One of Those Pyramid Schemes.

Why are so many involved in one of those pyramid schemes? This is the problem. We assume a business model we don’t understand is a pyramid scheme. They are not pyramid schemes, they are an alternative business opportunity that levels the playing field, making it affordable for most to get started with limited resources.

Pyramid Scheme

Pyramid structureA pyramid scheme has no final product. When you “buy in”, you give your money and then go and get others to do the same. In one model, you recruit levels below you and when it reaches so many levels, the top person leaves and the next two split to form two new pyramids. This continues until you can no longer get people to cough up the money to join the pyramid.

Notice that at no time did anyone buy a product or service. That’s what makes it a pyramid.

Here’s the rub, if you look at a “traditional” business model or a network marketing business model on paper, you will see a pyramid.

“Traditional” Business

In a conventional bricks and mortar type business, there is usually an individual who starts the business. They may eventually grow large enough to need more people. This is when the pyramid begins!

CEO

Vice-President Sales and Marketing | Vice-President Operations

District Sales Manager|Director Marketing|Director Facilities|Director Purchasing

Are you starting to get the picture? A “traditional” business eventually starts to become a pyramid. It can’t survive growth if it doesn’t. Those who believe they can do it on their own eventually give up under the weight of the business demands.

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) or Network Marketing

In the world of MLM or Network Marketing, there are a few challenges.

Legitimate MLM or network marketing companies offer a service or product that meets a particular need in the marketplace. For example (Yes, these are my affiliate links.):

Image representing Canadian justice. When you decide to try a network marketing business, you have to decide if you are going to just sell product or service or are you going to develop a business enterprise. The choice is yours to make. You are the CEO of your own business. You have just decided that your business is going to represent a company and their product or service. How you do that is up to you. MLM is an alternative business model where you will have built in systems and coaching. Your mind is like a parachute. It only works when it’s open.

Sales isn’t for everyone. The challenge is that we don’t know if we don’t try. Most of us are selling all the time and don’t realize it. Whether it’s convincing your boss to try something new or your spouse to go see a movie, you are selling the idea. You might to learn some skills and tactics specific to your chosen business to succeed. Go in with an open mind and be willing to learn.

Some find that they can be consumed by the business for a while. Think about it. Have you ever seen a friend or family member open a shop and all of a sudden, it seems they dropped off the face of the earth? They didn’t. They are focused on growing their business and sometimes have to make sacrifices. What are you willing to do? Are you one of those people that have a negative impact on people close to you who have tried to start a business, MLM or otherwise?

At times, the greatest challenge is your own mind. If you don’t believe in your own ability to achieve success, you can be guaranteed that you won’t. In the immortal words of Earl Nightingale, “you become what you think about most often“.

The bottom line is that most of those “pyramid schemes” are legitimate business opportunities. Are you afraid of them because you don’t believe you can succeed? Does labelling the opportunity a pyramid scheme allow you to excuse yourself from taking any risk and maybe achieving financial and time freedom?

The choice is yours to make. Don’t let others tell you what to do.

The video below is a little dated and some might think a little “cheesy” but it does a not bad job of discussing MLM versus pyramid.

Make it a great day!

Barry

P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for people who are able to think independently. I’m thankful for people who aren’t afraid to ask me to look at their business opportunity. I’m thankful for any chance to learn. What are you thankful for today?

Can’t or Won’t? Which is it really?

How often does somebody tell you that something can’t be done only to find out that the impossible was quite possible? There are very few things that can’t be done. In most cases, it’s just difficult and requires creative thinking and some extra effort.

We can’t…

Someone asked me about creating a survey that is not as drab and as boring as is most common. They wanted to create something more engaging. There were a few concerns. Attractive design, security and standards.

Where would the servers be? This is because of privacy issues and international law with regard to access. Stakeholders might have a concern because they  or their families may be at risk if someone were able to identify them. As North Americans we often take our life and liberty for granted.

Man giving thumbs down.We were told we can’t do what we want to do. There is a guideline on what sites should look like and it must be AODA compliant. My opinion is that what this really means is that it’s not as simple as hoped and could take some time and effort.

I suggested doing the engagement piece through a landing page which would provide some flexibility in presentation and make it more inviting to complete the survey. By doing this, the survey itself becomes quick and simple.

Everyone we asked was so focused on current policy and guidelines they don’t see the opportunity in front of them to actually make changes to facilitate true collaboration and communication. They are so focused on telling that they aren’t listening.

Or, we won’t…

Won’t do something is what most identify as can’t. For example, your family tells you there is no way to be successful in network or online marketing. In other words, you can’t be successful. You accept what they tell you and don’t make any changes in how you think or what you do. In the end you prove them right. You can’t because you won’t.

This is like the age old question about the chicken and the egg. Which came first? In the case of can’t or won’t, if you won’t then you can’t. If you will, you can!

Will You or Won’t You?

Whether you will or won’t change attitudes and behaviors determines whether you can or can’t achieve something new. The question is who will make the decision?

3D-Women-Question-02An open mind is like a parachute, if it’s closed, it won’t work. Just because someone won’t open their mind to opportunity and possibility doesn’t mean you have to crash with them. Don’t be like lemmings and follow the leader off the cliff.

Be the leader. Look and think for yourself,  release the self imposed constraints and watch how different the outcome can be!

Make it a great day,

Barry

P.S. What am I thankful for today? I’m thankful for open minds. I’m thankful for opportunities to effect change. I’m thankful for the power of the Internet. What are you thankful for today?

Be the positive energy in the room!

Backup: What’s Your Risk Management and Disaster Recovery Plan?

Backup! Backup! Backup!

When I was selling computer networks, that was our mantra. Without a good risk management and disaster recovery plan, you may as well fold up your business now.

Backup Because Disaster Happens

  • Hardware Failure
  • Theft
  • Fire and Flood

Every single person I know has lost at least:

  • their family photo albums
  • precious financial documents
  • precious memories and videos..

And did you also know (this is staggering), any company that loses their data for more than 10 days, 96% of them will file for banckruptcy within 6 months!!

Bad things happen to good people. Hard drives fail. Theft happens. When fire happens, your computer might survive the flames but will it survive the water? Be prepared. Make sure you have a good backup solution in place. Keep your data safe and secure where you can get to it when disaster happens.

Backup Options

  • Tape Drive
  • External Hard Drive
  • USB Key
  • Cloud

Tape DriveWhen I was in the computer solutions industry, the backup solution of choice was tape drives. I recommended an 11 tape rotation. One each for Monday thru Thursday (daily), 5 for five potential Fridays in a month (weekly) and 2 for alternate monthly backup. Expensive but in those days, the most comprehensive. We recommended the tapes be stored off site just in case of fire or theft.

Since then, the cost of storage has dropped dramatically. You can use an external drive bay for not much more than one tape used to cost. I would suggest setting up at least two drives to alternate on a daily basis so that you can take one home each day, if you can remember.

USB keyUSB keys are an option but are rather limited in how much you can backup and then you also have to remember to do it. Because of the size, they are easy to lose or have stolen.

And then, there is the cloud. There are multiple companies providing online backup. Let me tell you about a great solution!

GotBackup Cloud Backup

There are many great cloud backup solutions but let me tell you about Gotbackup.

Backup to the cloudIn 2011 only 7% of people used online backup, today 24% are and by 2016, 36% of consumers are expected to be using cloud storage and backup. 14% of home computer users will lose data in the next year due to no fault of their own. This is the very first true consumer product that every person needs who owns a mobile device like an iphone, ipad or android and/ or a home computer or laptop.
