Who Am I?

Who am I becomes incredibly important when we are having “one of those days”. Do you know the difference between your role at any given time and “who am I”?

Barry ClermontWho am I: “I” is who you are at your very basic core. Your core values and how those drive your interaction with the world around you at any given time. For example, I grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and came from a lower/middle class family. (Ssh! My siblings may not agree with that description!) Hamilton in the 60’s and 70’s was very much a manufacturing town. People in a community like that tend to be very down to earth and not really focused on amassing great wealth or impressing others with their brilliance. Don’t get me wrong, these people were a lot smarter than many people with doctorates that I have come into contact throughout my life.

As a result, I don’t consider myself any better than anyone else and actually sometimes struggle with being in a formal leadership position. This leads me to the difference between my “I” and my role or “R”.

Role

Our role changes at any given time, often many times within a single day! You may find yourself in the role of:

  1. Significant Other (Whatever that means for you!)
  2. Mother/Father
  3. Daughter/Son
  4. Student
  5. Leader or Manager

When you think about it, you could be all five. And, sometimes one or more may really suck!

MasksHave you ever had a day when either you disappointed someone or they didn’t live up to an expectation? In my experience, this could lead to either being frustrated because I lacked a skill or missed that I didn’t give the other person the tools they needed to meet my expectation. Ultimately, disappointed myself and ended up feeling angry or sad and feeling that I was a bad person or did something wrong. There is likelihood I was correct but it made me feel bad about myself.

Wrong! Don’t do that!!!

Understanding I/R Theory

It’s OK to be mad/sad/disappointed;

  • in how you delivered or didn’t on a promise; or
  • in how a project turned out; or
  • in a decision you made.

Barry the boomer!If I were to ask you out of 1-10 “how is your I today?”, the answer should always be a 10. This is how you see yourself as a person. Be careful not to confuse that with the role you are in at the time. Maybe as a father, you had to say no to a child and it made them sad or mad, or your wife or an employee. Sure, you feel lousy about having to say no and that’s OK. It doesn’t mean there is something wrong with you. Maybe even quite the opposite because that was the right answer for the circumstance. The problem is simply something is wrong with or in the role. And it may be that you have done something to violate a core value meaning you need to make a change in that role. When a project or job isn’t working, you can end it and walk away if you need to.

If you are constantly violating core principals, that affects the I. You have changed and when it’s for the worse, can destroy you. That needs to be fixed fast! If your employer is making you do something illegal or immoral, you may need to change employers. Maybe even a spouse. Do what you have to do to protect your “I”.

Sales Isn’t For Everyone But Is It For You?

We often hear people with MLM opportunities say “anyone can do sales”. Bull roar! Sales isn’t for everyone but is it for you?

What is “Sales”?

Believe it or not, those MLM folks are partly right about sales. We all sell every day.

  • Wife convinces husband to watch a favourite show.
  • Child convinces a parent to change a rule.
  • Mechanic convinces you the car needs an oil change.
  • The clerk at McDonald’s asks “do you want fries with that”.

In every instance, someone is selling an idea, process, product or service to someone else.

image of woman pulling manSales is the act of convincing someone to change their mind about something with the hope that they will see things your way. The popular phrase in sales is “stop selling and help them buy”. No matter how you cut it, it’s still sales. You helped move someone from one position to another and if you did it well, they think it’s their idea!

The question really becomes do you WANT to do sales? In each of the examples in the list above, someone had a strong desire to convince someone they had the best idea and their prospect NEEDED to follow their lead.

What are you passionate about? Do you have a strong enough belief to risk being told no? If the answer is no, the response is NEXT! Find what you are passionate about and do that.

Is Sales Ability Natural or Can You Learn?

Listen without judging.When you meet a “natural” sales person, the reality is that they learned from someone somewhere. Have you ever met that person who could sell anything to anyone? Take a look at their family and I will bet you someone close to them shows many of the same traits. This could digress into a discussion of nature versus nurture but I believe we grow up mimicking what we see.

Now, if you didn’t grow up in an environment where “selling comes natural”, it just means you may have to make a decision to grow and change. There are a few ways to do this.

Why Multi-Level Marketing?

Taking a program at university can cost thousands of dollars and years of your life.

Insurance and investment companies are great for training but again, there is a commitment of time and cost. In my case, my monthly cost was over $700/month on average. I left that business.

Opening your own business? The sky is the limit! If you bought a franchise it could be hundreds of thousands. You would have to sell a lot of coffee to pay that off!

By far, the most economical way to get sales training and probably better than you could get at any university, is to find a reputable Multi-level Marketing Opportunity.

The reality is you can learn sales if you want to. Start with Why!

Selling is one of the most lucrative careers for good reason. It’s not easy at first and takes time to learn. There are those who make sales, whether in a bricks and mortar business or MLM, look easy. I compare them to famous musicians. Most put in a lot of time and effort to become good at what they do.

MLM or MBA? What’s the difference?

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) has more value than a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). The funny thing is that MBA’s are likely to be offended by that statement. (My apologies in advance to MBA’s. This is to demonstrate a point that will make sense later.)

Masters in Business Administration (MBA)

Business woman with a briefcase.This designation tells me that you have the ability to study, stay focussed and finish what you start.

An MBA likely spent four or more years in University and $60,000 to $100,000 of someone’s hard earned or borrowed money. Many graduate with large student debt and missed the opportunity to make double that income. That means the true cost is likely upwards of $300,000. (Average cost of Tuition in Ontario:  $8,474)

Now it’s time to find a job or start a business. I have heard of people graduating with their MBA only to end up in a retail job making $30,000 a year with a debt load equal to two times their annual salary. Let’s see, the cost of a $60,000 loan would be approximately $552/month at 2% for 10 years. That’s if you are lucky enough to get away with 2%.

Should you want to start a business, it will cost you thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy a franchise or start a business from the ground up. Let’s see, you have a monthly commitment of $552 a month with no source of income and you want me to lend you money to start a business?

Congratulations! You’re an MBA!

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM)

This is a Life Long Learning Plan! “Tuition” may be as little as a couple of hundred dollars, once. From there, the ongoing costs can usually be controlled by you.

man-with-barsFor example, one my wife and I are involved in has a one time cost of $249 and then the only fixed cost is a monthly membership in a #LegalSavingsPlan that ends up saving us far more than the cost of the plan itself. Some people make a few dollars a year while others make hundreds of thousands. Like any business, it’s what you are willing to do that makes the difference.

Between meetings and our membership, our average operating cost is about $150 per month. You can’t realistically work in any sales industry for less than that. When I was in financial services, my monthly cost as a consultant was about $1,000 per month. If you can’t afford $150 a month, you shouldn’t get involved in any business.

What are the benefits?

Most MLM companies provide continuous education in areas like financial planning, sales techniques, time management, personal development and more. They also provide a supportive environment where you can feel safe and try new ideas.

What are the negatives?

The reality is we, ourselves, are the negatives. Success in a MLM opportunity is totally up to you and what you are willing to do.  Will you focus on your activity and use your time effectively? Can you make the choice to tune out the naysayers?

MBA or MLM

Only you can decide. What’s the old saying? “Different strokes for different folks”!

3D-Women-Arrow-02Some need the structure that an MBA and employment bring to their life. Others are more entrepreneurial and self directed and will find MLM a better way to go. There is no right or wrong direction, just the right or wrong one for you.

In my opinion, MLM is a path that those who lack huge financial resources can take to achieve their life goals, not necessarily just money. I have seen huge personal growth and transformation in many people over the past few years in our business, including an MBA who came to heed his father’s advice after trying corporate Canada!

Adversity Makes You Stronger!

I was at a LegalShield event a couple of years ago and one of the speakers used a great analogy to demonstrate why adversity is actually good for and makes you stronger.

TreeThink about a tree growing indoors shielded from the elements. This tree will appear to be perfect. It will grow straight and tall. Until, one day, the tree falls over.

The reason the tree falls over is because it never had to resist the wind or face any adversity. Because it never had to resist any wind, the tree never sent out any other roots to anchor itself. Eventually, the tree grew so tall that it just couldn’t hold itself up any more.

The next time you are faced with some form of adversity, just think about this tree. The challenges you face throughout your life each force you to grow stronger and stronger until all of a sudden, you start to find life easier and easier.

Next time you face a challenge, remember to say thanks to God for the lesson and know that he will never give you more than you can handle, even if you don’t believe it yourself.
